How to have multiple developers work on the same extension?

We have several extensions that have been developed and installed into our sandbox. As a new member of the team, I was attempting to make changes on an existing extension but was not seeing my changes showing up when I hit the correct endpoint. As a work around, I am having to create a copy of the existing extension and install it to the sandbox so I can work on that code. Then we have to work through a overly complicated process to merge the changes into the original extension and deploy to test.
I have searched through the docs and the community forum but have been unable to find how to configure the sandbox or extensions so that multiple developers are able to work on that code at the same time. I could really use some assistance in getting things set up correctly to allow this situation to work in a straight forward manner.

Hi Christopher, You mentioned you are a new member of your team, did your team have you go through docs for local dev setup and the initial dev tutorial? These are a great place to start when you begin developing with the SDK

Once you get through the initial setup, I recommend using a different short name for each person working on the extension. In fact, when you go to install a second of the same extension it will prompt you to give it a different short name.
